Neighboring Italy was shaken a few days ago by a horror event, in the full sense of the word.
This is confirmed by the words of the prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who said in a press conference: "In so many years of career, I have never seen something more terrible."
It is about an event discovered on the evening of February 11 in Altavilla, Palermo. A woman and her two sons were found murdered in their home. The body of Antonella Salamone, 41 years old, was found burnt. The two boys, 16-year-old Kevin and 5-year-old Emanuel, were found strangled with chains.
But the horror doesn't stop there. All three were tortured for almost 1 month, until they were killed. Authors of the event? The husband and father of the victims, Giovanni Barreca, together with their 17-year-old daughter and another couple, Massimo Carandente and Sabrina Fina. All have been handcuffed.
Reason? They were performing an exorcism, convinced that the house, the wife and the two children were possessed by devils.
The victims were macabrely raped and burned, tortures which were performed to get the devil out of their bodies. This is confirmed by the autopsy on their bodies, but also by the testimony given to the investigators by the 17-year-old girl, who, according to what Palermo prosecutors say, participated in these tortures.
According to the Italian media, the teenager has shown that during the exorcism they used a hot iron and hair dryer to burn her body and also a pan with which they hit her to drive out the devils. All this is confirmed by the autopsy on the bodies of Kevin and Emanuel. The 17-year-old was found in a state of shock and disorientation, while sleeping in the bedroom where the dead bodies of her brothers were.
So far, investigators believe that the two boys, after being tortured, were strangled with a chain. As for their mother, the cause of death is currently unknown. She was found burned in the garden of the house. Only the bones were left of the 41-year-old's body. The authorities have not yet been able to clarify the time when they died. They are suspected to have been killed at least 36 hours before the carabinieri were notified, around 03:00 on Sunday 11 February. Investigators do not rule out the possibility that they were killed on Thursday, February 8.
According to the testimony of the 17-year-old, fully convinced of the need to perform the rite against evil forces and not at all remorseful for the fact that she tortured and killed her mother and two brothers, Antonella Salamone was the first to be killed. She and her 5-year-old son were considered the origin of all evil. The woman tried to resist and even repeatedly begged her daughter to call the carabinieri during the ritual.
A prayer that fell on deaf ears. Once the mother was eliminated, it was the 5-year-old's turn. According to the teenager, his other brother, Kevin, took part in his torture and murder, until it was his turn to suffer the same end. The 17-year-old also testified that she had thrown herself on her stomach many times in order to expel the demons, admitting that she participated in the massacre all along.
During the press conference, the Prosecutor's Office of Termini Imerese in Palermo said that the rite in question had lasted at least a month and the entire Barreca family had participated in it, convinced that it was possessed by devilish forces. Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, as he stopped at the 17-year-old, said that she "has an intelligence and sensitivity out of the ordinary" and that she cooperated in the investigations, to reconstruct the whole event.
And according to the authorities, the father and husband of the victims, Giovanni Barreca, "always lived the faith with a kind of fanaticism" and he injected this into his family. But in January there was a 'deviation'. From that moment he had contacted the couple from Palermo, Massimo Carandente and Sabrina Fina to help them in the 'cleansing' rites. The relationship between them had become very close, so much so that the couple had gone to live in the Barrecas' house in Altavilla.
