US President-elect Donald Trump is planning to sign an executive order shortly after taking office that would ban transgender people from serving in the US armed forces.
"The Telegraph" writes that Donald Trump will use an executive order to carry out this move, and it could happen on the first day of his arrival in office.
The move will lead to the departure of thousands of soldiers at a time when the US armed forces are struggling to meet recruitment targets.
During his first term, Trump banned transgender people from joining the US military, but allowed those already in the service to keep their positions. This ban was overturned by Joe Biden.
Transgender people would also be barred from joining the military under the newly reported proposals.
"These people will be forced out at a time when the military cannot recruit enough soldiers," said a source familiar with Trump's plans . "Only the Marine Corps is meeting its recruiting targets, and some of those who will be affected are in very senior positions."
This decision raises serious concerns about the readiness of the armed forces. Today, about 15,000 transgender people serve in the U.S. armed forces, holding critical positions and specialties, the Times reports. Critics of the decision say their removal will add further pressure to the armed forces, which are already facing serious recruitment shortages.
Last year alone, the armed forces failed to fill 41,000 enlisted positions, and the process of replacing capable soldiers could take decades and cost billions of dollars.
Rachel Brannaman, director of America's Modern Military Association, noted that " removing 15,000 personnel would undermine military readiness, exacerbate the recruiting crisis, and send a dangerous message of weakness to US adversaries. There would be a significant financial cost, as well as a loss of experience and leaders that could take 20 years and billions of dollars to replace.”
About 2,200 soldiers had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria when the previous ban was lifted, but privacy policies keep the exact number of transgender military personnel from being known, according to the Pentagon.
The decision is not only expected to provoke social reactions, but also legal challenges, as civil rights groups prepare to oppose Trump's new policy.
