President-elect Donald Trump is "extremely concerned" by the increasing use of various types of weaponry in Russia's nearly three-year war against Ukraine, an adviser to Mr. Trump said Sunday.
Republican lawmaker Mike Waltz has been tapped by Mr. Trump to serve as his national security adviser during the new administration that takes office on Jan. 20. He told Fox News that outgoing President Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use land mines to try to stop the advance of Russian ground troops on the battlefield has turned the war in eastern Ukraine into something resembling trench warfare during the First World War.
Mr Waltz said the decision should be within a wider framework to end the conflict.
"On this front we are dealing with a large number of civilians and soldiers", he said.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said last week that the United States is sending anti-personnel mines to Ukraine because of the changing nature of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the main battleground.
Mr. Austin said that Moscow's advance is being led by Russian ground troops, rather than the more protected forces in armored personnel carriers, so Ukraine has a need for tools that can help slow that effort.
Mr. Waltz said President-elect Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, is troubled by the war's heavy toll. He said that the main question is "how can we revive prevention and bring peace".
"We must bring this (war) to a responsible end ," he added.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly stated that he would end the Russia-Ukraine war, even before he was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. Mr. Trump has not said how he would do that, and during the presidential debate in September he refused to say whether he wanted Ukraine to win the war.
President Biden lifted restrictions on Ukraine, allowing it to launch US missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers deep into Russia, in response to the deployment of 10,000 North Korean troops to fight alongside Moscow's forces. Two days later, Kiev targeted weapons depots in the Russian region of Bryansk with these missiles.
Then President Vladimir Putin launched a new experimental missile targeting the Dnipro region in eastern Ukraine.
"It's clearly a scam," Mr. Waltz said. "Where is this escalation going? How can we bring both sides to the table for peace talks”?
Mr. Waltz, whose post does not need to be confirmed by the Senate, said he had meetings with Jake Sullivan, President Biden's national security adviser.
