US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has made a surprising and strong statement. He said that Kiev has agreed to hold presidential elections in Ukraine, without giving details.
In an interview with Fox News, Witkoff declared that "there will be elections in Ukraine," adding that the war-torn country's leadership "agreed to this."
The Trump administration has increased pressure to force Ukraine to hold elections during wartime, something the country is constitutionally prohibited from doing, according to Politico.
Donald Trump had described his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, as a "dictator without an election."
"If there is going to be a peace agreement, Ukraine cannot be a member of NATO. I think that is largely acceptable," Witkoff said.
