President Donald Trump's administration has announced the freezing of $2.2 billion in multi-year grants and $60 million in contracts for Harvard University.
This decision came just hours after the institution refused to implement the federal government's demands for profound changes to its policies, CNN writes.
Harvard President Alan M. Garber said in a statement that the university will not give up its constitutional rights.
"No government, regardless of which party is in power, should dictate what private universities teach or who they should admit and hire," Garber declared.
The Trump administration has warned many universities across the US of funding cuts if changes are not made to school policy, while justifying the decision by saying that the measure aims to combat anti-Semitism on campuses and stop the use of federal funds - according to them - to promote racial discrimination.
"President Trump is working to make higher education great again. If Harvard wants to violate Title VI, it is not eligible for federal funding," a White House spokesman said.
Harvard currently has an endowment of $53.2 billion, but a large number of research projects in collaboration with the government are at risk. These projects include studies in the fields of health, artificial intelligence, climate and technological innovation.
The government has announced that it will also review $8.7 billion in other grants and more than $255 million in contracts between Harvard and federal agencies.
