"Green light" for Bosnia, Von der Leyen confirms the recommendation

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, has confirmed today that the commission will recommend the start of negotiations for the membership of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European Union.

Speaking in the European Parliament, Von der Leyen emphasized that the report compiled by the European Commission proves the progress that Bosnia and Herzegovina has achieved, therefore he recommended the Council to decide on the start of membership negotiations with the Balkan country.

"Since we gave it candidate status, Bosnia and Herzegovina has taken impressive steps towards us. More progress has been achieved in just over a year than in a decade," Von der Leyen said, listing several results, including the fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina now has a 100 percent alignment level with foreign policy and of EU security.

Among other achievements, according to her, are the law for the prevention of conflict of interest, the inclusion of the sentences of the International Court of war crimes in The Hague in the state register of crimes and some other results.

"This is the reason why today we decide to recommend the Council to open membership negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The message from Bosnia and Herzegovina is clear. Therefore, our message should be clear as well. The future of Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the European Union ," she said.

Following the recommendation of the European Commission, the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union must take the decision to start the negotiations.

This will be on the agenda at a Summit that will take place on March 21 and 22 in Brussels.

There are currently 10 countries in the Expansion Process. Of them, 9 have candidate status and Kosovo is the only country that does not have such a status, even though it has applied for membership in the bloc.

Turkey, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Ukraine and Moldova have also decided to start membership negotiations.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia also have candidate status, but so far they have not made a decision on opening negotiations./REL
