Latvia's armed forces have announced that an unidentified drone has entered the country's airspace for the third day in a row, prompting an immediate NATO response.
According to military authorities, Alliance fighter jets, engaged in air policing missions in the Baltic region, took to the air to monitor the situation.
"NATO fighter jets assigned to Baltic air policing missions were deployed in response," the Latvian armed forces said in a statement.
The origin of the drone has not yet been confirmed, but the incident comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region. In recent months, several Ukrainian military drones have accidentally entered the airspace of NATO member countries.
On Tuesday, a NATO fighter jet shot down a suspected Ukrainian drone over Estonia after the aircraft was believed to have strayed from its course due to Russian countermeasures. A similar incident in Lithuania caused air traffic to be disrupted and forced politicians to take shelter underground.
The situation has heightened security concerns in the Baltic region, while Latvia is also facing a political crisis after the government resigned last week amid criticism over its handling of previous drone incidents.
