The Ukrainian military has destroyed a Russian A-50 surveillance plane, Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said on February 23, after Ukrainian military and regional officials said at least five people were killed and 27 others wounded in a new wave of drone and missile attacks that Russia carried out in several regions of Ukraine.
"An A-50 aircraft, nicknamed 'Bayan', made its last flight," Oleshchuk wrote on Telegram.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian army said in a bulletin published on Friday evening that Ukrainian forces have pushed back Russian forces along the entire front line. This headquarters announced that 58 combat clashes took place during the day.
Ukrainian armed forces are separately holding the front line in the area near Mariinsky, where Russian troops have tried 31 times to break through the defenses, the General Staff said, noting that there have been airstrikes in other parts of the Donetsk region.
The Ukrainian army also said that its forces have repelled six attacks in the area of Bahmut and another nine in that of Avdijivka.
These claims could not be independently confirmed.
Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down 23 of the 31 drones that Russia launched in several regions.
The military said a drone strike on a building in the port city of Odesa killed three people. In Dnipro, a drone attack on a residential building killed one woman and wounded eight others, regional officials said.
These reports come a day after the launch of the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine marks the second anniversary. The war has caused thousands of casualties and major infrastructure damage in Ukraine. /VOA
