German prosecutors have filed criminal charges against 27 extremists for planning a violent coup.
27 extremists suspected of being members of the far-right Reichsbürger (Citizens of the Reich) movement have been charged by German authorities with planning a violent coup d'état.
"The members of the group strongly opposed the state institutions and the free democratic constitutional order," the indictment of the German justice states.
Prosecutors accuse the 27 people, who are mostly associates of Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss (a Reichsbürger figure from an aristocratic family), of planning to overthrow Germany's democratic political system.
The group has been preparing for a coup since the summer of 2021, while German intelligence has managed to discover around 23,000 followers of the Reichsbürger movement nationwide.
The plan was to seize power by occupying the Bundestag, with a small group of armed personnel. The attack would be launched after receiving a signal, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The alleged plotters had already determined how their new state would function after the coup, with Prince Reuss to be declared head of state.
Prince Reuss has even tried to meet representatives of the Russian government to gain support for the coup, and after taking office, he would negotiate a peace treaty with the Allied powers that won World War II.
Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, at the time a member of the Bundestag for the far-right Alternative for Germany party, would take over as justice minister. Prosecutors said she exploited the position by giving access to parliamentary buildings to other associates.
The rebel group is also suspected of trying to recruit soldiers and police officers, while drawing up lists of enemies they would strike once they take power. They even had in their possession about 380 firearms and 148,000 rounds of ammunition.
The members were aware that their plans would lead to the killing of innocent people and were forced to sign a nondisclosure agreement, which stipulated that traitors would be executed. /BBC
