Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has arrived on Capitol Hill where he is preparing to deliver a speech to secure further $61 billion in US military support.
The administration's proposed $106 billion aid package includes about $60 billion in aid to defend Ukraine against Russia, with the rest for Israel's war with Hamas, security in Taiwan and funding for operations on the US-Mexico border.
But top Republicans, wary of adding more to the $111 billion the US has already sent to Ukraine, have demanded that any further funding be tied to key immigration-related policy changes.
Now in his appearance before the US lawmakers, Zelensky will try to convince them to remove the veto that prevents the approval of the military aid package for Ukraine.
Meanwhile rap. Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most vocal critics of Ukraine in Congress, said the Republican base would revolt if Congress accepted a deal on aid to Ukraine in exchange for border security. According to her, the government's obsession with financing the endless war in Ukraine is a disease.
" I think it's very insulting to the American people to conflate our border security with the Ukrainian border. This is completely wrong, our border should come first. It's all about sending money to Ukraine, continuing to fund a war, continuing to kill people, and our border remains open. I am sure he will come (to) beg for money. Washington is not interested in finding a path to peace for Ukraine. They only care about funding the war, so they continue to fund the military complex. And I think it's very sick; I think it's very disgusting ," she told CNN.
On the other hand, the Kremlin said on Tuesday that it will monitor "very closely" the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington on Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov played down the potential impact of the meeting, saying that despite US aid to Ukraine, there has been no significant success on the battlefield.
" It is certainly important for everyone to understand that the tens of billions of dollars poured into Ukraine did not help it succeed on the battlefield ," he said./CNN
