Russia "rained" missiles in Ukraine, 4 dead and about 100 injured

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that four people were killed and at least 92 others were injured during a barrage of missile and drone attacks carried out by Russia on January 2. The scale of the attack was similar to a massive attack carried out by Moscow days earlier.

On the morning of January 2, the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was hit by explosions, authorities said. Power was cut in parts of Kiev as air defense systems reported repelling a Russian missile attack, hours after Moscow attacked the city with drones. In Kharkiv, one person is reported to have been killed and 20 others injured in mass Russian attacks in the city.

The attacks come a day after Russia launched 90 Shahed drones across Ukraine. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, declared that his country will "intensify" its attacks on Ukraine.

Putin's warning on January 1 came after shelling in the Russian border city of Belgorod, where dozens were reported killed and more than 100 wounded. Russia has blamed Ukraine for the December 30, 2023 attack.

In a post on social networks, Zelensky said that Russia has launched about 170 Iranian-made Shahed drones and dozens of different missiles into his country since December 31.

"For the third day in a row, our air defense is doing an outstanding job.

I thank all our partners who have helped strengthen our air defense. It is clear that this helps to save hundreds of lives every day and night that would be taken by Russian terror if it were not for Patriots and other air defense systems,"  Zelensky wrote in Telegram.

The command of the Ukrainian Air Force said that with the attacks of January 2, Russia repeated the mass attack of December 29, in terms of the number and type of missiles used.

On December 29, Russia bombarded Ukraine with approximately 158 missiles and drones.

The governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Synyehubov, said the region was hit on January 2 with at least "four airstrikes" that destroyed buildings and civilian infrastructure.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force said it had destroyed 35 drones launched by Russia after midnight that targeted several Ukrainian cities, including Kiev.

Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has repeatedly carried out missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
