The story surrounding the attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci has taken an unexpected turn and Italian public television Rai has decided to suspend summer rebroadcasts of his show "Report".
The decision was made by the company's In-Depth Division "pending full clarification on this delicate and complex issue," Corriere reports.
According to the company, the decision was made "to protect an editorial legacy of great value to the public service," adding that "the new season of Report" in the fall remains unannounced.
The journalist immediately commented on the decision, describing it as disturbing.
"I am shocked and concerned for the entire media that Rai has decided to use the pretext of shameful and absurd speculations that have spread in recent hours from certain political statements and journalistic reconstructions to suspend the summer rebroadcasts of the investigative episodes of Report that have already been broadcast."
"This suspension is motivated by exactly the opposite: this is not the protection of the 'editorial heritage of great value for public service' and the program itself, but rather the delegitimization not only of me personally, but also of all the work of individual journalists, who have independently and autonomously carried out important investigations and are a real asset to information and democracy," he declared.
The latest developments in the investigation into the bombing of Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci have completely changed the direction of the case, significantly weakening the lead that for months had been considered one of the strongest: that of an attack ordered by organized crime, including Albanian criminal groups, because of his investigations.
According to the latest developments in the investigation, the Rome Prosecutor's Office suspects that the person who ordered the assassination may have been businessman and former journalist Valter Lavitola, a person who, paradoxically, was a close friend of Ranucci himself.
In an interview with La Repubblica, Ranucci said he is shocked by this hypothesis and that he cannot believe that Lavitola would have wanted to harm him or his family.
"I consider Valter a true friend. I'm waiting to see the evidence, but I'm convinced that he would never harm me and my family," the journalist declared.
He also dismissed rumors that the assassination could have been staged to gain publicity.
"I don't need publicity. On the contrary, I would like less exposure after all the attacks I have received. How could I risk my daughter's life?" he said.
Ranucci revealed that his friendship with Lavitola began in 2019, right after the investigative show Report published several investigations into his activities. Later, according to the journalist, Lavitola also became a source of information for other investigations.
He also confirmed that Lavitola had spoken to him about a political project and asked for his help, but stressed that he had never intended to enter politics.
Regarding the motive for the assassination, Ranucci continues to believe that the bomb was not intended to physically eliminate him, but to prevent the publication of an important investigation by the Report show.
"The explosive device was placed there to stop a piece of news that was going to reach us. It was an indirect message, not directed only at me," he said.
Investigations continue to uncover the motive and verify the evidence linking Lavitola to the assassination, but recent developments show that the idea that the attack was revenge by the Albanian mafia for Ranucci's work is no longer at the center of the investigation, while prosecutors' attention is focused on the relationship between the journalist and his friend, Valter Lavitola.
