French President Emmanuel Macron reacted angrily to Donald Trump after the US president mocked him for being hit by his wife, as the conflict between America and NATO deepens.
Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that Trump's comments about his marriage were "not at all elegant and not up to standard," The Guardian reports .
This reaction came after the US president mentioned the viral video from last May that appeared to show the French First Lady pushing Macron in the face as they prepared to disembark from a plane in Vietnam.
"Then I call France, Macron who is being treated very badly by his wife, he is still recovering from the blow to the right jaw," the US president joked during an Easter lunch at the White House on Wednesday, hours before giving a live-streamed speech about war with Iran.
“And I say, ‘Emmanuel, we would love to have some help in the Persian Gulf, even though we are setting records by destroying bad guys and ballistic missiles, we would love to have some help… can you send ships right away?’”
The US president then mimicked Macron's response, using a mock French accent: "No, no, no, we can't do this Donald, we can do it after the war is won."
He continued: “I said, ‘No, no, I don’t need them after the war is won, Emmanuel.’”
"So I learned about NATO, NATO won't be there if we ever have the big one, you know what I mean by the big one," Trump said, without elaborating.
