Egypt, Israel and the United States have reached an agreement to allow foreigners in Gaza to leave through the Rafah border crossing to Egypt, a senior Egyptian official announced. He said that Israel has agreed to stop attacks on areas where foreigners will pass through to leave besieged Gaza. He also stated that Qatar is involved in the negotiations and the participants have also received approval from the Palestinian militant groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
A second official on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing said they had received "instructions" to reopen on Saturday afternoon for foreigners arriving there from Gaza. The first official indicated that negotiations are still underway to allow humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza through this border crossing.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, the Associated Press news agency reported. Israel has ordered mass evacuations of Palestinians from the north of the Gaza Strip to the south.
They have been given until 16:00 local time on Saturday to leave, after which an eventual Israeli military offensive in Gaza is expected. The escalation of the conflict happened a week ago, when members of Hamas carried out surprise attacks in Israel, leaving over 1,000 people dead.
A similar number of casualties was recorded in Gaza as a result of retaliatory attacks by Israel, which has declared war on Hamas and vowed to destroy it.
