A serious event happened yesterday in Ecuador where a politician was killed, less than a week after the killing of one of the favorites in the presidential elections on Sunday, August 20.
Pedro Briones, a politician of the Civic Revolution (Revolución Ciudadana) party was killed yesterday. Neither the police nor the government of outgoing President Guillermo Lasso immediately confirmed the killing.
According to police sources, Pedro Briones was killed outside his home in the community of San Mateo by two men on a motorcycle.
We recall that after the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, a state of emergency was declared in Ecuador.
Outgoing President Lasso blamed organized crime for the assassination of the presidential candidate and said those responsible would be punished. Six Colombians have been arrested, while a seventh Colombian was killed in a shootout with the candidate's bodyguards.
