Jeffrey Epstein: Suicide or murder? The doubts that don't fade even after 6 years
The US Department of Justice has insisted from the beginning on an official version: Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire accused of sex trafficking minors, committed suicide on August 10, 2019 in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) federal prison in Manhattan.
Autopsies, FBI investigations, and a recent memo released in July 2023 all confirm the same conclusion: suicide. But the circumstances of the tragic night, blatant errors by prison staff, and some evidence that doesn't fit the official scenario have fueled strong conspiracy theories and suspicions that it may have been intentionally eliminated.
From arrest to isolation
Epstein was arrested on July 6, 2019, at Teterboro Airport, after returning from Paris. The charges against him were serious: sex trafficking and exploitation of minors, charges that could land him in prison for decades. He pleaded not guilty and requested house arrest at his luxury Manhattan mansion, but the court refused, citing the risk of him fleeing or reoffending.
In prison, Epstein was first transferred to a shared cell, then to the Special Isolation Unit (SHU), due to his high profile and the danger he posed. A psychological check-up in the first few days confirmed that he showed no signs of depression or suicidal thoughts. However, on July 23, guards found him unconscious and with marks on his neck, an episode that remained unclear: a suicide attempt or an attack by a cellmate, a dangerous criminal. After 31 hours of strict observation, he was returned to the same cell, but this time without a friend. This decision, which contradicted prison protocols, proved fatal.
Last night
On August 9, Epstein had a meeting with his lawyers and then a phone call with his girlfriend. According to witnesses, he was “in a normal mood, with no signs of distress.” At 7:49 p.m., security cameras recorded him entering the SHU wing. This was the last time he was seen alive on video.
Prison regulations required checks every 30 minutes, but that night the two guards on duty, exhausted from long hours of work, did not conduct any real checks. The investigation revealed that they even slept for two hours and falsified the minutes, claiming to have checked the cells.

The Justice Department’s final report (June 2023) acknowledged that prison staff had facilitated the suicide: guards had provided extra sheets and prohibited items, while Epstein complained that he had been locked in a dark shower for hours and lived in miserable conditions (“Big blocks of cockroaches were crawling on my hands,” he wrote in a note). However, the latest memo officially confirms the suicide and denies the existence of any powerful “client list,” which many suspect was the main motive for eliminating him.
The mystery continues.
Doubts have not been extinguished by official documents, videos, or FBI conclusions. Jeffrey Epstein had close ties to politicians, businessmen, and important global figures. Part of the public continues to believe that his death was a murder to silence a global sex trafficking scandal. Even former President Donald Trump wrote a skeptical message that night: “Suicide under 24/7 surveillance? Of course!” Today, he no longer comments on the case.
