The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has created a new party in Germany that aims to fight racism against Muslims.
Erdogan has announced that the Democratic Alliance Party for Diversity and Awakening was created on January 7 and will participate in the European elections that will be held this June.
The new party, which is an offshoot of the official Turkish party, immediately faced backlash from other parties in Germany.
The Minister of Agriculture in Germany, who himself has Turkish roots, has said that the creation of this new party is something unnecessary.
"A branch of Erdogan running in the elections here is the last thing we need," wrote Cem.
Even the vice-president of the largest conservative Christian Democratic opposition party, Jens Spahn, criticized this initiative of Erdogan.
The new party is expected to be led by Teyfik Ozcan, who has insisted that the party's finances will be provided entirely from within the country, in full compliance with the electoral law, since in Germany it is illegal to receive funds from foreign countries.
Erdogan's move follows a new law in Germany that allows dual citizenship, which means that 1.5 million Turks living in Germany will have the right to vote.
