At the intergovernmental conference with Montenegro, Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi said that the expansion of the European Union is a real project and the new plan of 6 billion additional euros for the region proves this.
EU member states are expected to give the green light to additional funds for the region.
"With the new plan for the region, we not only want to create new opportunities not only for economic growth, but also to accelerate the real integration in the EU even before the full membership of these states. This means gradual integration into the European common market by providing additional funding to accelerate the reform agenda. This would consolidate the work of those governments that are looking forward to membership as well as to realize especially regional integration where the states interact with each other as the current member states of the EU do" , said Varhelyi.
The opening of the regional market is expected to increase the Gross Domestic Product of the Western Balkans by 10 percent.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Hadja Labib, said that EU enlargement is a strategic issue for the peace, security, stability and progress of our continent.
"EU enlargement is a strategic issue for the peace, security, stability and progress of our continent. In this regard, our relations with Montenegro and other countries of the region take on special importance. We reaffirm the clear perspective for the EU membership of the six Balkan states in the EU. Together we can face challenges such as regional cooperation, economic development and environmental protection. Currently there is a geopolitical context that we must take into account, the war in Ukraine and external influences in the Western Balkans. Expansion for us remains primarily a process based on specific criteria and based on individual merit. I see that there is a strong will for this, so I believe that you will progress in the future", he said.
Montenegrin Prime Minister Miljoko Spajic aims for Montenegro to be the 28th member of the EU by 2028.
