Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Stockholm of not properly implementing its new anti-terror law to crack down on the actions of Kurdish separatists, whom Ankara calls "terrorists".
He stated that Sweden cannot wait for Turkey's approval of its membership in NATO before the summit of the Atlantic alliance.
"Ankara 'cannot positively approach' Sweden's request to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization when "terrorists" are protesting in the streets of Stockholm," Erdogan said .
The annual NATO summit will be held in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on July 11 and 12.
Erdogan's reaction came hours before Swedish, Finnish and NATO officials were scheduled to hold talks with their Turkish counterparts in Ankara.
Erdogan also said that the Swedish side should not expect a change in the Turkish attitude before the summit.
We recall that, the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said yesterday that in Brussels, progress has been made in the contacts in Ankara and that the talks took place in a constructive atmosphere.
He even stated that they will continue to work so that Sweden's membership in NATO takes place as soon as possible.
