Erdogan in Putin's footsteps? Turkey withdraws from post-Cold War security

With the decision of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey will withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), a key post-Cold War agreement. The decision will come into force from April 8.

The Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty was signed in November 1990 between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

The Conventional Forces Treaty set limits on the number of fighter jets, attack helicopters, heavy artillery and tank divisions that could be deployed between the Atlantic Ocean and Russia's Ural Mountains.

The 1990 treaty, negotiated and concluded at the end of the Cold War, was designed to de-escalate potential East-West conflicts. The CFE, originally signed in 1990 by the then members of NATO and the six then Warsaw Pact states, entered into force in 1992.

He imposed arms limitations to maintain the military balance between NATO and the then Warsaw Pact countries.

Russia formally withdrew from the CFE treaty in November last year, but had suspended active participation many years ago. Russia had suspended its involvement in the treaty in 2007.
