Law enforcement authorities in Germany are investigating possible indications of foreign interference in connection with attacks that took place in the country last year. Security authorities are investigating possible indications of foreign control over these attacks, German media report.
"Investigations are now underway and the information is being taken "very seriously," a spokesman for the Federal Interior Ministry in Berlin said. ZDF had previously reported on possible Russian influence or involvement, among other things, in the knife attack in Mannheim in May 2024.
The ministry spokesman explained that the investigation into individual attacks includes whether there was "financing" or "control" in the background.
According to current data, there are no "clear indications" of this.
ZDF reported on Sunday about suspicious internet searches from Russia in the run-up to last year's attacks and there have also been searches related to election dates.
In addition to the attack in Mannheim at the end of May just before the European elections, which left a police officer dead, there was also the anomaly of the fire at the DHL air cargo hub at Leipzig Airport in July. A few weeks later, state elections were held in Saxony.
"I think it is completely clear that these digital traces, the evaluation and analysis of these digital traces can be an important building block to getting closer to the truth, and in this respect this should be taken into account," Green Party politician Konstantin von Notz told ZDF.
"The attacks before the elections are evident," he added.
