Attacks on Iran, Starmer: Reduce tensions urgently, escalation serves no one

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on Israel and Iran to urgently reduce tensions.

Through a post on the "X" platform, he states that all parties must urgently withdraw, as escalation serves no one. Starmer writes that he is engaging partners to reduce these tensions. He emphasizes the importance of returning to diplomacy.

"Reports of these attacks are worrying and we urge all parties to step back and de-escalate urgently. Escalation serves no one in the region. Stability in the Middle East must be a priority and we are engaging partners to de-escalate. Now is the time for restraint, calm and a return to diplomacy," Starmer wrote.

The Israeli military says Iran has shot down about 100 drones toward its territory, after Israel launched a major attack on Iran overnight. The IDF says it has carried out strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran and claims Revolutionary Guard chief Hossein Salami and other commanders have been killed.

The attack is part of Operation Lion Rising, says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, adding that Iran was a threat to "Israel's very survival."

Israel has declared a state of emergency, saying the country expects counterattacks "in the near future."

Iran has accused the US of supporting Israel's attack, a charge the US strongly denies. President Trump said he was aware of the attacks in advance but stressed that the US played no role.
