Extreme weather in Europe

Storms, floods and record snowfall cause transport disruptions and damage in several European countries

Several European countries are facing extreme weather phenomena, which have caused flooding, transport disruptions and power outages.

In France, storm Nils has triggered a red alert for flooding in three departments: Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne and Maine-et-Loire. The Garonne River has overflowed its banks, while rainfall has fallen on waterlogged soils, increasing the risk of further flooding. Authorities expect further increases in the levels of the Maine and Loire rivers. The government has announced the declaration of a state of natural disaster to speed up compensation procedures. Experts point out that the intense rainfall is occurring in the broader context of climate change.

In Romania, heavy snowfall and strong storms have paralyzed air and road transport. More than 166,000 households have been left without electricity, while in Bucharest there have been long delays in rail transport and flight cancellations at Henri Coandă Airport. Authorities have declared a red alert in several regions and have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. In mountainous areas, the snow depth has reached up to 162 centimeters.

In Italy, a powerful avalanche hit the ski resort of Courmayeur, in the Aosta Valley, causing damage to infrastructure and forcing authorities to launch rescue operations. The Alpine region regularly faces the risk of avalanches during the winter, due to heavy rainfall and temperature fluctuations.

Recent developments indicate that parts of Europe are experiencing a period of severe weather conditions, with a direct impact on daily life, transport and public safety.
