Dramatic moments were recorded on Thursday afternoon at the airport on the island of Zakynthos, when a Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jet burst into flames shortly after an emergency landing.
According to Greek media, the pilot of the aircraft, a modernized F-16 Viper from the Hellenic Air Force's fleet of 54 F-16 Block 52+ Advanced aircraft, had timely notified the National Air Operations Center, the Tactical Aviation Command and the Araxos air base, from where it had taken off, of the technical problem he was facing during the flight.
After immediate coordination between military authorities, the pilot received instructions to make an emergency landing at Zakynthos airport.
The island's civil airport authorities immediately activated emergency procedures, temporarily suspending all landings and takeoffs of civilian aircraft until the operation was completed.
According to reports, the decision to land in Zakynthos indicates that the defect was serious, as the pilot did not have the necessary time to continue the flight to the Araxos base, which is only a few minutes away with an aircraft of this type.
The released images show that the plane is suspected to have suffered a defect in the braking or landing system. As a result, it landed on its body ("belly landing"), as the wheel system did not activate. Immediately after stopping on the runway, the plane burst into flames. The exact causes of the incident are not yet known and Greek authorities have launched an investigation.
