Beyond the tariffs and court battles over Trump's policies, two intrigues within the White House came to the fore on Tuesday:
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suspended two senior Pentagon officials, Dan Caldwell and Darin Selnick, as part of an investigation into who leaked the secret to a planned top-secret conference on China to Elon Musk.
Axios learned that Musk or Hegseth did not simply decide to cancel that conference after the leak, but the order came from President Trump himself.
"What the hell is Elon doing there? Make sure he doesn't go," Trump was quoted as saying, according to a senior official, Axios reported.
Musk has annoyed some administration officials with his constant presence at the White House.
The planned Pentagon conference, however, caused him to cross paths with the boss at the Resolute Desk.
“The president still loves Elon a lot, but there are some red lines,” the official said. “Elon has a lot of business in China and he has good relationships there, and this briefing was just not the right thing to do,” the official added, according to Axios.
Trump had also said he would not allow conflicts of interest with Musk, although critics doubt his sincerity.
The China episode became public on March 20, when the New York Times accurately reported that Musk had planned to attend a Pentagon conference the next day on military plans in the event of war with China.
At 11:00 PM on March 20, Trump wrote on Truth Social to call the report "Fake News" from "The Failing New York Times."
"They incorrectly said that Elon Musk will be at the Pentagon tomorrow to be briefed on plans for a 'possible war with China.' How ridiculous! China will not even be mentioned or discussed. How shameful that the discredited media can fabricate such lies. However, the story is completely false!!!" Trump wrote.
But that Truth Social message wasn't posted until the plan for Musk's Pentagon briefing had been changed.
