Who is the Wagner group and who fights for it?
The Wagner Group - officially known as PMC Wagner - is a private military.
It was identified for the first time in 2014, when it was supporting pro-Russian separatist forces in eastern Ukraine.
At the time, the group was secretive and operated mainly in Africa and the Middle East, and is believed to have only 5,000 fighters worldwide - mostly veterans of Russia's elite regiments and special forces.
Since then, the group has grown considerably.
"Wagner has a lot of opportunities now that he commands 50,000 fighters in Ukraine and has become an important factor in the war," the British Ministry of Defense said in January of this year.
She has said that the organization has started recruiting large numbers of troops in 2022 because Russia has had problems recruiting people for the regular army.
The National Security Council in the United States has said that about 80 percent of Wagner's troops in Ukraine have been released from prisons.
Although mercenary forces are considered illegal in Russia, the Wagner group registered the company in 2022 and opened its new headquarters in St. Petersburg.
"The group is actively recruiting in Russian cities and is being considered by the Russian media as a patriotic organization," said Samuel Ramani, from the Royal United Services Institute.
What does the Wagner Group do in Ukraine?
Wagner fights alongside the regular Russian army in the war against Ukraine.
The group has been heavily involved in the capture of the city of Bahmut, located in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian troops have said that large numbers of fighters have been sent to fight in open areas and many of them have been killed as a result.
At the beginning of the war, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not mention that the Wagner group was involved in the fighting.
However, she later praised the group's mercenaries for their "encouraging" role.
Wagner's Foundations
In an investigation by the British broadcaster BBC, it is mentioned that the former Russian army official, Dmitri Utkin, was involved in the group.
A veteran of Russia's wars in Chechnya, he is believed to have been Wagner's first commander in the field, and he is believed to have named the group after the nickname he had on the radio.
The current leader of the group is Yevgeny Prigozhin, a wealthy businessman known by the nickname "Putin's chef" because his company prepared meals for the Kremlin.
"Wagner's first operation was to help Russia annex Crimea in 2014," said Tracey German, professor of conflict and security at King's College London.
