
The United States has begun mediating three days of peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is a new attempt to resolve the conflict that is constantly erupting between these two states.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has started mediating talks with foreign ministry advisers in Washington. This is the second time that talks have been held in a few months.
" We continue to believe that peace can be achieved and that direct dialogue is key to resolving the remaining issues and achieving a lasting peace ," said US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller before the talks began, adding that "very sensitive" issues will also be discussed.
Historically, Russia has been the mediator of talks between the two former Soviet republics, but the US and the European Union have been quite active at a time when Moscow is continuing its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Armenia has repeatedly accused Russian peacekeepers of failing to keep promises to protect ethnic Armenians under a 2020 ceasefire deal negotiated by Moscow after six weeks of fighting that left thousands dead.
