The former commander of Britain's amphibious task force disagreed with the view of some experts that the superyacht was the victim of a "black swan event".
The term is used to refer to a high-impact, rare incident that is difficult to predict but is often seen in retrospect as inevitable.
Bayesian is thought to have drowned after being hit by a tornado over water - known as a waterspout - which caused her to capsize.
"I think it's quite interesting that a lot of people are saying this is a black swan event," Admiral Chris Parry told Sky News.
"It's not really. There are about 500 of these kinds of events in the Mediterranean every year," he added, referring to the water flows.
"I've been studying the Mediterranean for the better part of 50 years, and they're quite common and are associated with certain atmospheric conditions."
Rear Adm Parry added: "They usually occur around September and October increasing in number, but due to sea level warming they are occurring more and more in August now.
"Although this is a very unfortunate event, in fact, they are predictable at certain times of the year."
