Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel has agreed to postpone the occupation of Gaza for now so that the US can ramp up missile defenses in the region.
According to the newspaper, the Pentagon is working to deploy nearly a dozen air defense systems to protect American troops in the surrounding areas from Hamas rockets.
While a ground offensive by Israel was expected and many thought it would have happened by now, but according to security and defense expert Deborah Haynes, the reason for the delay was to allow the US to increase defenses in the Middle East in areas where has its own bodies.
"I spoke to the prime minister's spokesman, he had a daily briefing and asked him about that report and he said that Israel is moving forward with its plan and will act according to its demands. It's not shooting from the hip, it was the language the spokesperson used. The goal remains to destroy Hamas, but it is clear that it will not be able to do this through military means alone, so they have set this goal," she said.
According to her, the US is trying to ensure and take measures for the consequences that may come from the response of Hamas and the countries that support it.
"They have a military operation behind it, but everyone can see that as this military force escalates... and there is an expectation of a ground offensive, the big concern is the consequences for the region. That's why you've worried the US about the impact on American assets here and whether they could also be indirectly affected, especially if Iran-backed groups decide to get more involved," she concluded. / SkyNews
