Is Donald Trump okay?
The health of US President Donald Trump is becoming a topic of serious discussion in the American media and political circles. Recently, Trump, the oldest president ever to win an election in the US, has appeared more tired, with a paler appearance than usual and with slower movements. The famous “tan” makeup looks applied thicker and less carefully, while the president is often seen dozing off even during meetings at the White House.
Trump's public agenda is noticeably lighter than in his first term. He spends more time at golf clubs, travels less, and the grand rallies that were once the mainstay of his political campaign have become rare. The president often sits down, even when others are standing, and his official schedule usually begins after noon. A New York Times report found that his public appearances have been reduced by 40% compared to the first year of his first term.
In addition, Trump has disappeared from public view for days, as he did over the summer, while his administration has provided vague and often contradictory information about his health. On several occasions, his right hand has been seen bruised or bandaged, and the White House has claimed it was “bruising from excessive handshakes,” an explanation that has been dismissed as frivolous. In some images, his feet appear swollen.
Trump himself has said he had an MRI in October, but has not explained what exactly the exam was for. He told reporters aboard Air Force One that “I don’t know what they tested, but whatever they tested, they tested well.” The White House physician confirmed that the MRI was done on the heart and abdomen, as a “preventive” measure, but medical experts have disputed that, saying that an MRI is not typically used for routine checkups, but for potential pre-existing conditions.
Trump has also said he took a cognitive test and "passed it," but that hasn't stopped speculation from mounting. Despite the lack of an official diagnosis, questions about his physical and mental state are not just related to his age, but also to his apparent decline in political influence.
During the 2024 campaign, Trump had harshly attacked Joe Biden for his age and incompetence, portraying him as a president “on autopilot.” He even placed a picture of an autopen machine, which for Republicans symbolized Biden’s inefficiency, in place of his official White House portrait. But now, it seems, the symbol of fatigue and helplessness is becoming Trump’s own.
His declining popularity has emboldened his opponents and weakened his role within the Republican party. Voices for a third term, which would be unconstitutional, have faded significantly, while allies are reluctant to take risks for a president who is no longer untouchable.
Meanwhile, Trump himself has become more reflective and, according to some media outlets, is talking more often about death. In a statement in October, he said: “I’m not sure if I’m going to heaven. Maybe I’m not meant to be there.”
Whether Trump is truly in declining health remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: he is old, and his political clout is not what it once was. For many in Washington, it is a sign that the “Trump era” has entered its twilight. /Adapted from “ The Guardian ”
