A plane owned by former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle crashed today shortly after taking off from an airport in Statesville, North Carolina.
According to preliminary information from local authorities and aviation sources, the Cessna C550 aircraft had taken off normally, but shortly after takeoff it reportedly experienced technical problems. The pilot is suspected of attempting to immediately return to the airport, but the aircraft crashed before it could make an emergency landing.
As of early Thursday afternoon, officials had not released the identities of the passengers on board or their medical conditions. Emergency crews and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, while the surrounding area was cordoned off for safety reasons.

Images released by the airport show the plane engulfed in flames immediately after the crash. Authorities and rescue teams rushed to the scene, while an investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident. Experts will analyze flight data, weather conditions and the technical condition of the plane to understand what led to its crash.
Greg Biffle, who has retired from professional NASCAR racing, has not confirmed whether or not he was on the plane at the time of the accident.
