What is happening in Europe? Extreme weather, fires and storms cause problems in

High temperatures and autumn-like storms are causing fires and flooding Europe's roads this summer.

Firefighters on the island of Sardinia battled to bring a series of fires under control. The efforts of emergency crews were complicated by a strong wind, known as a mistral, blowing across the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, some tourists have already packed their bags and the damage is being assessed. On Sunday, around 600 people were evacuated in various areas of Sardinia due to raging fires that engulfed the northeastern and southern regions of the island.

Even in Portugal, firefighters are struggling to control fires that have engulfed thousands of hectares. About 800 firefighters attended a fire near the southern city of Odemira overnight on Monday, where more than 1,400 people had to be evacuated. At least nine firefighters were injured fighting the fires. Temperatures above 40C (104F) are expected to hit much of the Iberian Peninsula this week.

Three large fires that burned hundreds of hectares in Spain over the weekend have been brought under control, but warnings remain in place for much of the country.

The death toll from heavy rains and floods in Slovenia has risen to 6, while clean-up operations continue with the help of neighboring countries.

Prime Minister Robert Golob has described the torrential rains and floods as the worst natural disaster since independence three decades ago. Slovenia, an EU member, has asked for help from the bloc, specifically seeking heavy machinery such as excavators to manage the aftermath of the floods.

Storm "Hans" has affected Norway, causing flooding.

And after experiencing an unusually wet July, Denmark continues to face weather that looks more like autumn than summer.
