What risks does regime change pose in Iran?

A change of leadership in Iran will not be bloodless for the country's people...

In his first message, launching the US-Israeli military attack on Iran, President Trump outlined a series of long-term objectives.

Addressing the people of Iran, he called on them to resist and overthrow the regime, taking control of their country.

Both the American president and the Israeli prime minister, in their first statements, did not hide their main goal, regime change in Iran. But how much and what risks does such a change bring?

A brief analysis from the Wall Street Journal provides the possible bloody scenarios.

As noted, in the first phase, the American-Israeli objectives will cause unrest among their allies, especially the US, in the region, including the Gulf countries and Turkey, which are already concerned about a wider regional war, which could bring instability to their doorstep.

Also, encouraging Iranians to resist increases the likelihood of serious retaliation from a regime that likely sees itself as fighting for its survival.

More likely, the regime itself will launch a series of mass killings against Iranians who resist, as it did last January to suppress the January protests.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his call for Iranians to overthrow the government, saying on Saturday that the time had come for the Iranian people to "shake off the yoke of tyranny and create a free and peaceful Iran."
