The meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Serbia, Volodymyr Zelensky and Aleksandar Vucic at the Athens summit attracted a lot of attention and raised the eyebrows of Serbian opinion and the general public, given that Vucic, as someone who opposes the imposition of sanctions on Russia, is considered "the man of Putin" in this region.
However, it seems that despite this, Zelensky has assessed that the conversation with the president of Serbia was important because, as he said, they are connected by respect for the UN Charter and the inviolability of borders.
But it is expected with great interest how the President of Russia Vladimir Putin will react.
Despite the criticism, Dana's interlocutors estimate that the meeting is positive for both of them and for the countries they lead.
Nikola Lunić, executive director of the Council for Strategic Policy, tells Danas that nowadays any meeting with President Zelensky means more arms and ammunition for Ukraine.
" There is no doubt that this meeting between Zelensky and Vucic will contribute to Ukraine's struggle for freedom. I don't know how Russia will analyze and evaluate it at this moment, but I am not sure that this development of events suits it. Namely, it is in its interest to destabilize the Western Balkan region and possible conflicts. And this is not in the interest of either Ukraine or Serbia, because Ukraine and Serbia have explicit and clear, practically common interests within the framework of international law. And this is the recognition of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their countries ", explains Lunič.
The former ambassador to Serbia in Belarus, Srečko Djukic, believes that no one lost in the first bilateral meeting between Vucic and Zelensky, which took place on neutral ground in Athens.
" I think both sides have won and it is a real political shame that this meeting and conversation is taking place almost a year and a half after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Belgrade's position of distancing itself from Kiev and avoiding the visit and conversation with Zelensky is incomprehensible. If nothing else, normal communication would remove the noises in the ties that have begun to threaten Serbian-Ukrainian relations in the most sensitive segment of Kosovo ", he emphasizes.
According to him, Serbia should invest in post-war Ukraine and should be with European countries and nations, among which Ukraine will occupy a prominent place.
When it comes to Putin and Russia, Djukic says, they can only be grateful to Vucic that, at the highest cost, he refuses to impose sanctions on them, which greatly harms Serbia's current and perhaps future position in international relations.
Vucic was asked at the press conference if he talked about weapons with Zelenski, to which he answered that they talked about everything.
" Of course, I discussed the situation on the battlefield, the European path of Ukraine and Serbia. For Kosovo and Metohija, the territorial integrity of Ukraine and everything else that concerns us. We had a very polite and honest conversation ," he said. / Danas
