Greece continues to be on alert from the many fires since yesterday.

The Greek media write that a powerful fire has broken out on Mount Parnithas on the outskirts of Athens.

The situation is alarming as several houses and cars have been burnt in the village of Hasia. Firefighters are trying to keep open the road that connects Athens with the villages in the area.

Likewise, for the fifth day in a row, fires continue in Evros in the North-Eastern area of Greece. There are two major fronts here, one near the city of Alexandroupoli, the other in the Dadias forest on the border with Turkey.

In this forest the day before, there were 18 victims, including two children. It is suspected that they are illegal immigrants who lost their lives during the fire.

The fires are also active in Rodopi, Fiotidha and Viotia.

Volunteers loaded the sheep into the trunks of cars to save them from the flames.

In the nearby Greek port city of Alexandroupolis, dozens of hospital patients, some on stretchers, others with IVs attached to their arms, were evacuated on a ferry.

A satellite image broadcast on state television showed smoke from the Evros fires had spread across the country in the northwestern Ionian Islands, not far from Italy.

Summer fires are common in Greece, but this year they have been made worse by extremely hot, dry and windy weather, which scientists attribute to climate change.

In July, tens of thousands of foreign tourists were evacuated from the island of Rhodes, where a fire burned for a week, burning hotels and resorts as well as land.
