New Year's Eve celebrations end in tragedy in Germany, 2 young people die;

New Year's Eve 2026 celebrations have also left tragic consequences in Germany.

Two 18-year-olds have died after being hit in the face during a fireworks display in the German city of Bielefeld.

Police announced in the early hours of the morning that several incidents occurred on New Year's Eve in various locations in the city, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

One of the two teenagers died at the scene in the Baumheide neighborhood. The second, who was injured in the Brake neighborhood, was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

According to police, a 14-year-old boy also lost his left arm in Rendelich, near the city of Rostock (northeast), due to a fireworks explosion.

In Berlin, five people were hospitalized after being injured by fireworks as of 10:30 p.m. Two of them were in serious condition.

In Leipzig, a 16-year-old girl lost her little finger and part of her ring finger when she tried to light a homemade firework.

Fireworks are only allowed on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in Germany.

Injuries, sometimes fatal, are common when dealing with fireworks, as illegal homemade fireworks sometimes contain powerful explosives.

On New Year's Eve 2025, five people lost their lives in similar incidents.

According to an analysis by the insurance company AOK, hospital cases for people injured in fireworks accidents over the past ten years on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day have averaged 530, 2.6 times more than on any other weekday and 4.4 times more than on any other normal weekend.

Every year, medical experts, police officers, environmentalists, and animal rights activists call for a ban on the sale of fireworks and pyrotechnic materials.
