The Belgian navy has seized a tanker suspected of violating EU sanctions against Russia, which was sailing under a false flag in Belgian waters. France assisted in the operation, which targets Moscow's shadow oil fleet.
The operation was carried out by the Belgian Ministry of Defense in the country's exclusive economic zone. Authorities say the ship was sailing under a false flag and that its ship's documents were forged. The tanker was identified as the Ether, registered under the Guinean flag.
" Belgium may be a small country, but we are among the founders of NATO and the EU and we take our responsibilities seriously ," Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said on social media.
French President Emmanuel Macron said French naval helicopters assisted Belgian forces during the boarding operation.
" Europeans are determined to cut off the sources of financing for Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine by implementing sanctions ," Macron wrote on X.
The European Union has previously designated several dozen tankers as members of Russia's shadow fleet. These ships are banned from docking in European ports.
