Italy has offered to play the role of mediator between the United States and the European Union, at a time of heightened tensions due to tariffs and political clashes.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is considered by some European leaders as a figure who maintains good personal relations with US President Donald Trump.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stressed that Rome has the capacity and the right profile to contribute to reducing tensions.

"Italy, by its nature and ability to talk to everyone, can play a positive role in building agreements," Tajani declared, adding that Meloni is in constant dialogue with both Washington and European partners.

According to him, there is no need for conflict escalation.

"Trade wars serve no one. We need dialogue and solutions that do not harm either party," said the head of Italian diplomacy.

Prime Minister Meloni has also taken a critical stance towards the customs tariffs announced by Trump, calling them a "mistake".

She confirmed that she had spoken directly to the US President and that she had expressed her position openly. At the same time, Meloni tried to tone down, speaking of a problem of communication and understanding between the two sides of the Atlantic. “From the American point of view, the message coming from Europe has not been clear enough,” she said.

Another opportunity to unblock the situation is expected to be the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Donald Trump is expected to arrive on Wednesday. German Chancellor Merz will also be present in Davos, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after a telephone conversation with Trump, stated that work to reduce tensions will continue and that he looks forward to meeting with him in Switzerland.

Italy, although one of the founding members of NATO, did not send troops to the Danish-led reconnaissance mission to Greenland. Seven other European countries participated in the mission: Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.
