France against Israel's plans, Macron demands immediate cease-fire in Gaza

French President Emmanuel Macron said today at a conference in Paris that the world must push for a humanitarian ceasefire to save lives in Gaza.

Macron rejected Israel's plans to push people into "safe zones" in southern Gaza, saying only a ceasefire would save innocent lives being lost in the conflict's bombing.

He was speaking at a hastily assembled humanitarian conference in Paris attended by politicians, NGOs and UN humanitarian agencies.

Macron described the proposal of safe zones in southern Gaza as a "bad idea" that does not guarantee security, as there is no political agreement between the parties.

At the conference, support was given for a humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to southern Gaza. Officials also floated ideas for airdrops of humanitarian aid or field hospitals inside Gaza.

Israel reportedly rejected Macron's invitation to the Paris conference, while Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was present. The latter raised the question of whether the daily killing of children was sufficient to act.

"This is not a war against Hamas, but against the Palestinian people ," he said, urging the international community to reject Israel's plans to push the people of Gaza south. Macron said at the end of the conference that he would speak with Israeli officials.
