France calls UN Security Council, Guterres calls for de-escalation: Regional
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today strongly condemned the military escalation in the Middle East and urgently called for an "immediate cessation of attacks," warning that failure to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and stability.

In an official statement released today, Guterres stressed that joint US and Israeli air strikes on Iran, as well as Iranian retaliation across the region, undermine international peace and security.

He recalled that all member states must respect their obligations under the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of other states.

" I condemn today's military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, and Iran's subsequent retaliation across the region, undermine international peace and security. I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation. Failure to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability ," Guterres said.

He encouraged all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table, emphasizing that there is no valid alternative to the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

At the same time, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency session this evening at 10:00 p.m. Paris time, to discuss the situation in Iran and the Middle East, at the request of France.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that the meeting was requested by France, along with Bahrain, China, Russia and Colombia, to address the alleged aggression and its consequences.
