US President Donald Trump decided to attack Iran at the end of a day marked by meetings and consultations at the White House, on February 27. According to Italian media reports, he received the two envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who informed him that the Iranian side had rejected the conditions set by Washington.
The United States demanded the handover of over 400 kilograms of enriched uranium and the dismantling of three main nuclear facilities: Isfahan, Fordow and Natanz. According to the same sources, Tehran did not accept these demands.
A key moment in the process took place in the office of Vice President JD Vance. He hosted Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi, who has been mediating the negotiations and is considered by Tehran to be a reliable channel of communication. Busaidi arrived from Geneva, where the latest rounds of talks between American and Iranian representatives took place on February 26.
The Omani minister argued that there was still room for agreement. According to him, the parties had agreed to focus first on the nuclear file, leaving the issue of Iranian ballistic missiles for later. He also highlighted the presence at the table of Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as the authority that can independently verify the nature of Iran's nuclear program.
Busaidi proposed a new calendar of meetings to gain at least a week of time: a technical-level meeting on March 2 in Vienna, at the IAEA headquarters, and another round of talks in the following days.
According to reports, Vance's response was blunt: either Iran accepts the American conditions, or military action will follow. After meeting with the Omani minister, the vice president contacted the president. Trump then addressed the American public and announced the decision to attack.
