House Speaker Mike Johnson said the group of congressional leaders, known as the Gang of Eight, was briefed this week that military action against Iran may be necessary to protect American citizens and troops in Iran.
The strikes on Iran are also expected to last at least a week, according to Israeli officials who spoke to Walla. A report from Fox also noted that US officials expect the event to last several days, not just hours.
The Gang of Eight refers to eight congressional leaders from both parties who are briefed on classified intelligence matters by the executive branch. Johnson said the missiles launched at Iran today by the US and Israel are a result of the country facing the grave consequences of its evil actions.
"President Trump and the Administration have made every effort to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions in response to the Iranian regime's continued nuclear ambitions and development, terrorism, and killing of Americans and even their own people," Johnson wrote in X.
