Israel and the United States struck military and command targets in Tehran and western Iran this morning as part of Operation Roaring Lion. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they aimed to degrade threats to Israel’s home front following ballistic missile launches by Iran.
Israeli officials said the first wave of attacks was planned for the morning hours to exploit a limited operational window and maintain the element of surprise, rather than a strike at night.
Defense officials said months of intelligence gathering and operational planning created a detailed target bank, including up-to-date locations of key Iranian commanders and senior decision-makers. They stressed that the operation relied on close coordination with American counterparts and full information sharing.
According to the same sources, the IDF Intelligence Directorate and Mossad led the intelligence efforts, dividing the geographical responsibilities of the attacks between Israeli and American forces. The respective commands maintained coordination and de-confliction mechanisms at several levels.
Officials said each pilot and crew received personalized target packages, listing specific facilities and individuals, as well as mission schedules and itineraries. The initial strikes also hit command headquarters and operations rooms linked to Iranian security structures, they said.
About two hours after the initial attacks, Iran launched strikes on US-linked targets in the Persian Gulf and fired missiles towards Israel, setting off alerts in several areas of the country. The escalation followed US President Donald Trump's confirmation of US involvement.
Israeli air defenses conducted several interventions to intercept the rockets, while authorities maintained emergency protocols in force, in what was described as a heavy barrage across Israeli territory.
In parallel, the Israeli Air Force launched other strikes against support infrastructure and ballistic missile launch sites in western Iran, an area where, according to officials, Iran had concentrated its recent launch activity.
The IDF estimated that the operation in western Iran will continue in waves for several hours, as long as missile attacks from Iranian territory continue.
