German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany would seek "strategic partnerships" with China during a trip planned for next week, at a time when the United States is relying on tariffs to influence global politics.
According to reports, the visit aims to discuss future cooperation between Europe and the world's second largest economy, in a tense trade context.
"We have a strategic interest in finding partners in the world who think and act like us, and who are willing to shape the future together, so that our country remains prosperous and with a high level of social security," says Friedrich Merz.
During an event in Bavaria, Merz stressed the importance of cooperation with global partners who share similar values and called for foreign and economic policy to be approached in an integrated manner. He argued that the two areas should no longer be separated from each other.
The Chancellor stressed the need to maintain a stance independent of the impact of US tariffs. The United States can set tariffs according to its own interests, but Germany and Europe, he said, follow a different approach.
"If Americans believe that, with their tariff policy, they should exert influence around the world, if they believe that tariffs are more important than taxes at home, then that is something that Americans, of course, can decide for themselves. But that is not our policy," he said.
Merz expressed concern that the tariffs could further damage the struggling German economy. He warned that if the United States continues to escalate the situation, Europe will be able to defend itself.
According to reports, the Chancellor also stressed that the European Union remains ready for dialogue, but at the same time prepares defensive measures if its interests are violated.
