Coast Guard Commandant John Mauger explained at a news conference that the Titan's explosion was due to a "fatal pressure chamber problem."
Titan was between 3,300 and 3,500 meters deep when it disintegrated. So strong was the pressure that the walls burst outwards like an explosion. This phenomenon has caused the immediate death of the passengers.
It has been speculated that the submarine, manufactured by OceanGate, was an experimental vessel with improvised components. The former director of the American company, David Lochridge, warned in 2018 that the Titan needed more tests to be used, but they ignored him.
It later came to light that the Titan was only certified for a depth of 1,300 meters.
John Mauger said that "we continue to work to understand and explain concretely what happened".
The US Coast Guard announced Thursday that all five people aboard the Titan submarine had died.
The announcement from the Coast Guard was preceded by a statement from the American company 'OceanGate Expeditions', which had manufactured the submarine, which expressed regret for the death of 5 people on board the Titan. "Our thoughts go out to them and their families," the company said in a statement.
"An unmanned robot launched from a Canadian ship discovered the remains of the submarine this Thursday morning about 488 meters from the Titanic at a depth of about 2 miles (4 kilometers)," US Coast Guard Admiral John Mauger said at a news conference.
"The pieces of metal from the submarine testify to a catastrophic loss of oxygen in the submarine's pressure chamber," he said.
The Coast Guard said it would continue to search the area where the wreckage of the submarine was found.
On board the submarine was French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a former naval officer Stockton Rush, founder and chief executive of the company 'OceanGate Expeditions', British billionaire Hamish Harding as well as a businessman of Pakistani origin Shahzada Daëood and his son 19- year old Suleman Daëood. The trip to see the remains of the Titanic cost 250 thousand dollars per person.
