Turkish authorities have detained a former correspondent for German state-run international broadcaster Deutsche Welle in Ankara, accusing him of "spreading false information" and "insulting the president."
The Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office said on Thursday evening that it had detained Alican Uludag and opened a criminal investigation based on some of his social media posts.
He will appear before prosecutors on Friday.
DW said the correspondent, who has worked for the broadcaster for several years, was arrested in Ankara and taken to Istanbul police on Thursday.
DW Director General Barbara Massing called the allegations baseless and said the arrest was "a deliberate act of intimidation and shows how seriously the government is suppressing press freedom."
DW said the charges against Uludag are related to his criticism of the Turkish government's measures that led to the release of suspected ISIS militants in a post on the social media platform X that he made about a year and a half ago.
DW added that his apartment was searched and his IT equipment was seized, Reuters reported.
