Iran's Revolutionary Guard says it has targeted a US warship, claiming the attack forced it to withdraw from the area of operations.
According to a report carried by the Iranian state news agency Fars, the target was the USS Tripoli, an LHA-7 amphibious assault ship.
Iranian authorities claim the attack was carried out with "lightning-speed" missiles, which they say forced the ship to move deeper into the southern Indian Ocean. However, the statement did not provide details on the exact time or location of the incident.
The United States Central Command had earlier announced that the USS Tripoli, which carries about 3,500 personnel as well as transport and combat aircraft, arrived in the Middle East on March 27, strengthening the American military presence in the region.
So far, the United States has not given an official response to Iran's claims about this attack.
