The discovery of explosive devices near a strategic gas pipeline connecting Serbia with Hungary has sparked a strong political clash, at a crucial moment for the Hungarian parliamentary elections on April 12.
Former Swedish Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt raised serious doubts about the nature of the incident, comparing it to a possible “false flag operation” to influence the political climate in Hungary. According to him, such a scenario fits with Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s interest in changing the electoral dynamics at a time when polls show him at a disadvantage.
Bildt added that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić would be willing to help Orban, hinting at political coordination between the two leaders who have built a stable alliance in recent years.
Serbian authorities confirmed that explosives and equipment for their activation were found in the Kanjiža area, near the pipeline that transports Russian gas to Hungary. Following the announcement from Belgrade, Orban immediately called an emergency meeting of the Defense Council.
The event quickly became politicized. Hungarian officials suggested a connection to Ukraine, presenting the incident as part of broader pressure on Budapest to change its stance on the war.
These accusations were rejected by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, which described the event as an attempt at manipulation and disinformation, suggesting that it may be an operation related to Russian interests in the region.
Along the same lines, several investigative journalists in Hungary have also reported that there were preliminary signals of such an incident, reinforcing suspicions of a prepared scenario.
On the other hand, the Kremlin reacted by leaving open the possibility of Ukrainian involvement, linking the incident to previous cases of sabotage of energy infrastructure. This stance reflects the broader narrative clash between Russia and Ukraine, but at the same time places Russia at the center of the debate over its influence on political developments in Central Europe.
The Hungarian opposition has interpreted the incident as an attempt to create a climate of fear and mobilize the electorate. Politician Akos Hadhazy called the incident "fabricated," while opposition leader Peter Magyar said there had been public warnings of such a development just days before the election.
In the background lies a broader reality: Serbia and Hungary remain among the most dependent on Russian energy in Europe and have maintained close political relations with Moscow. This makes any incident related to energy infrastructure not only a security issue, but also a potential instrument of political influence.
The event takes place at the most delicate stage of the election campaign in Hungary, where the balances are fragile and any unexpected development could affect the final result.
It remains unclear whether this is a real threat or an operation used for political purposes.
