Israel's recent attack on Iran's South Pars gas complex has brought back into focus the potential discrepancies between political statements and actions on the ground, according to Middle East commentator Tara Kangarlou.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that a “powerful attack” had been launched on Iran’s largest petrochemical plant. The development comes just weeks after a similar attack on the same facility in mid-March.
According to Kangarlou, the previous reaction of the US president, who had suggested that Israel would not continue with such attacks, contrasts with the current situation. She points out that the latest action comes at a time when talks and negotiations are supposedly taking place for a ceasefire in the region.
The analyst raises two main issues: first, who determines the direction of strategic decisions in this conflict; and second, whether there is a division between the objectives of the United States and those of Israel.
