German giant opens largest ammunition factory in Europe
Rheinmetall AG

German defense industry company Rheinmetall AG has officially opened the largest ammunition production plant on the European continent. Located in the town of Unterlüß, the facility will initially focus on producing 155 mm artillery shells, which are a standard for NATO forces.

Also present at the inauguration ceremony was NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who underlined the strategic importance of this investment for European security, especially in the context of rising tensions in the east of the continent.

According to Rheinmetall's official statement, full production capacity is expected to be reached by 2027, with a potential of up to 350,000 artillery shells per year. Furthermore, starting in 2026, the plant will expand its activity to include the production of missile weapons, which will significantly strengthen the company's technological and operational capabilities.

Following this expansion, Rheinmetall has also announced plans to build a new factory in Ukraine, with the aim of creating an integrated defense network at a European level. This initiative aims to deepen cooperation between NATO member states and regional partners.

Meanwhile, according to a survey published by the German Forsa Institute, 52 percent of German citizens say that Ukraine should consider making territorial concessions in order to reach a peace agreement with Russia. This figure reflects the growing polarization within European public opinion regarding how to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
